The Rector's Ramblings...May 28, 2009

With the passing of Memorial Day, the summer season is upon us.  For many of us this is the time when we think in terms of vacations and times of recreation and renewal for the body and soul.  In our fast paced society all of us are in need of these times in order to keep things in the proper perspective.  There is a prayer in The Book of Common Prayer that reminds us of this fact.  It is a prayer that I use a lot.  O God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God...(p. 832) I pray that this summer season may be a time of renewal for each of you.  As a way of getting the renewal process started for you, let me make a couple of suggestions for activities that can be done individually or as a family.  First, make time each day for a time of personal devotion, a time of prayer and reflection.  Read and reflect upon Morning or Evening Prayer and read Scripture.  For June, our staff at the church is going to read and reflect upon a chapter of the Book of Proverbs each day.  This might be something you would like to try.

Secondly, make time each day for exercise in your life.  One of the best ways to handle the stress of the day is to take care of yourselves physically.  Find an activity that you enjoy and get started.  Even a quiet walk with a favored pet can make you feel better about life.

Thirdly, spend some quality time with those you love.  Summer is a great time for parents to provide opportunities for their children to experience things that will create memories for a lifetime.  Just don't get too regimented in these activities.  Sometimes things that are done spontaneously become the most meaningful things for families.

May this summer truly be a time of peace and renewal for each of you.

Faithfully, Bob
