The Rector's Ramblings...July 23, 2009
In St. Paul's Second Letter to Timothy, we encounter what we today would describe as the words of encouragement and instruction from an elder priest to a younger priest. Some of the words are rather direct, such as, "Have nothing to do with stupid and senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels." (2:23) Paul knew that there were far more important issues to be concerned with than with these matters that do nothing to build up the Church. I find it amazing that these words are just as relevant for a priest in the life of the Church today as they were in the life of the early church.
Other words were spoken as a reminder of that which is truly important. He tells Timothy, "All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work." (3:16-17) I believe that Paul is telling Timothy that he needs to allow the scriptures to touch his life in order that he might lead others along the way. In order to do this he must commit to study and reflection.
In the midst of the hectic pace of day to day living this is sometimes hard to do. I remember a Bishop saying at an ordination service that he used to put a discretionary fund check in the Bible that he gave the newly ordained until he found out the checks were not being cashed. While this statement caused some laughter, I found the words to be as pointed as those of Paul to Timothy. There is no excuse for me as a Priest of the church to not spend time in study and reflection for it is in the words of scripture that we truly encounter the one who is the true Word of God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
I encourage each of you, as well, to commit to daily reading and reflection of the words of scripture. Begin your study and reflection with the words of The Collect for the Sunday closest to November 16 on your lips: Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: grant us to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given to us in our Savior Jesus Christ...(BCP p. 236).
Let the words of scripture guide you in the pilgrimage of faith, as you live your life in the world as a disciple of Jesus Christ.
