Good News at CGS...

Congratulations to Christin Birchard who made the Dean's List for the year at Appalacian State and also to Katie Hendrickson who made the Dean's List at NC State University this year. Good going Christin and Katie; we're proud of you!

Also, thank you to Mike Hoppe for arranging the donation of an array of beautiful container plantings that will greatly enhance our facility.

Wednesday Evening Easter Book Study

Please join us Wednesday Evenings Through May 19th!

A SHORT HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY by Stephen Tomkins "The sort of book I wish I'd read fifty years ago. Steve Tomkins provides a context for so much of Western history over the last two millienia. His book explains a lot." - TERRY JONES, star and co-writer of Monty Python. Worshiped by 2 billion Christians worldwide, Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous human being ever. Yet grasping the vast story of his followers over the last 2,000 years can be a dizzying, difficult task. In A Short History of Christianity Stephen Tomkins takes readers on an entertaining and enlightening journey through the key stages of Christian development, covering the people, the events, the movements, and the controversies of the church. ... His penetrating, energetic Short History of Christianity is sure to delight and inform a broad range of readers. Meeting at 7:00pm in the Parlor, 1st floor, Duncan-Giersch Center. This group will meet through May 12th.

EYC Action: May

Please Note for May:

  • I need help planning our May 23rd reception for Seniors (after the 10:30am service) and our May 30th evening with Fr. Joseph Lasuba of the Episcopal Church of the Sudan (to which the entire parish is invited).  I encourage youth to take leadership roles in planning some of our activities:  contact me if you're willing to help with either of these events.  (I also need adult help with both events.)
  • Several lost and found items from the retreat are in my office, including a hat, a flashlight, and a Bible.  Stop by on Sunday morning to pick up your belongings.
  • We're already gearing up for summer!  Download information about our summer trips here.  Please contact me if you're interested in participating in any of our summer trips (as a student or chaperone), or if you'd like to help organize fund-raising efforts.

I look forward to seeing you soon!  -- Wren Blessing

Good Shepherd Children (Otherwise Known as the Hands & Feet of God)

From Janet Gilliam, Director of Children's Ministry

Children at the Church of the Good Shepherd, once again, collected money in small paper arks as part of their Lenten discipline, Their combined efforts will purchase a llama, three rabbits, two flocks of geese, a flock of chickens, a flock of ducks, and a hive of bees! Heifer International will administer this effort, thus providing families in need around the world with a means of sustainable survival.

We give thanks for the disciplined efforts of each child who participated, as well as each parent who encouraged and applauded their efforts. Imagine the family far from here that will receive these creatures and know that there will be eggs for breakfast and a pack animal for work! All this is possible because children at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh, NC, were wiling to be obedient in service to God. They have been "the hands and feet of God." Congratulations children!!!

Serve One Another Class "Conversations on the Way"

Meeting at 9:15am in Shepherd's Hall, Third Floor, Duncan-Giersch Center

We continue our "Conversations on the Way" by looking at what we as individual Episcopalians believe as we explore the core teachings of our faith and new  interpretations of those teachings. This week, May 9, we'll discuss "The Bible: The Word of God for the People of God." As Episcopalians, we will listen with open hearts and open minds to differing points of view and differing beliefs of class participants as we thoughtfully practice our accepting and affirming faith. Come join us for this week's discusion. Jim Ward will facilitate.

EYC in Action: May

After a fun - if a bit soggy - retreat last weekend, I look forward to seeing many of you at church this coming Sunday.  Check out the bulletin board on the first floor of the parish life center (near the Hillsborough St. circle driveway) for photos of our time at Camp Chestnut Ridge.

This Sunday morning (May 2nd), Bishop Gregg will visit the parish to confirm several members including a few EYC folks.  On Sunday evening, we will gather for EYC to learn more about who a saint really is.  Middle School students will meet from 4-6pm and High School students will meet from 5-7pm.  You can look forward to several new games and activities, and a shared dinner at 5:30pm in Shepherd's Hall.  Please recall that we will not have EYC on May 9th.

A few other notes:
