EYC: July 25th & Beyond!
Dear EYC Friends,
I'm excited about the opportunity we will have on Sunday evening, July 25th, to hear and reflect on Stanley Hauerwas's talk, "Why Did Jesus Have to Die?" Of all of our summer programs, Stanely's two talks have perhaps the most significant capacity to impact the ways that we relate to one another and conceive of God. Please make every effort to attend! We will meet at CGS at 5:15 pm and will return by 8:45 pm. Let me know if you plan to come so I that I can get enough transportation. (Note: we will not have dinner together. Please eat beforehand.)
Right after church on Sunday (July 25th) afternoon at 1pm, a group of us will attend The Great Cross Country Race at Raleigh Little Theatre. Let me know if you'd like to join us.
Twelve EYC folks are signed up for our Harvest of Hope weekend of service (August 13-15). There may be additional space available: contact me if you'd like to join in.
Also, note the following upcoming opportunities for service:
- August 2 (10-12:30 am): EYC serves at Shepherd's Table
- August 18th (6-8:30pm): EYC babysits for Splash dinner (note date change from August 8th)
I look forward to seeing many of you soon.
In Christ's peace, Wren Blessing, 919/831.2014

Rise and Shine VBS Children!
Our 2010 Vacation Bible School children arrive at the 8:00 a.m. service on Sunday, July 25, to perform some of their newly acquired musical selections. These little "Egyptians" will be performing some selections from the "Joseph's Journey From Prison to Palace" curriculum which they'll learn Saturday, July 25th! Afterwards, they will continue on to Shepherd's Hall where they will have a cereal breakfast. Their reward for all their hard work will be to take a journey of their own. They'll be pulling out of Raleigh from the Amtrak station at 10:56 a.m. sharp aboard the Carolinian!!!! When they arrive in Rocky Mount, a bus will return them safely to Raleigh! What great fun to travel with friends in the summer of 2010! We think Joseph would have liked to come with us!
Evening Meditation & Prayer in July
All of us enjoy getting away for summer vacation time or even for a weekend break. Remember that our service of Evening Meditation and Prayer is a perfect way to include worship in your weekend plans. If you're coming back into town on Sunday afternoons, please join us for this inviting and relaxing service at 5pm on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. It's our same warm and inviting Sunday afternoon serivce, just with a more reflective name. You are invited to come participate in our next services on Sunday, July 11th & 25th. Dress is casual. Then...join us for a wine and cheese reception in the Duncan-Giersch Center following the service.
If you can help with setting up the wine and cheese receptions for these services, we would be grateful. Please contact Miriam Saxon if you can help.
Evensong--5:00PM, 2nd & 4th Sundays each month

VBS Blankets the World
As part of Egypt VBS 2010, our church will join Operation Kid-to-Kid, an international mission project that allows hundreds of thousands of kids to create and send soft, cuddly blankets and Bible coloring books to hurting children in Africa.
During Egypt VBS, kids and adults will make special blankets that say "God Loves Me" right on them! World Vision will add these cuddly blankets to backpacks filled with health and hygiene items and school supplies. Plus, kids and adults will personalize a Bible coloring book to go into the backpack, as well. Donations to cover the blankets and coloring books ($11/set) are gratefully accepted. "GOD AND GREEN":
A BIBLE STUDY ON CHRISTIAN CARE FOR THE CREATION
SUNDAY, 9:15-10:15 AM IN ROOM 404, 3rd Fl, Duncan-Giersch Parish Life Center (Battle Bible Class Room)
Presenter and Facilitator: Bill Bennett
The BP oil rig disaster and the resulting environmental damage in the Gulf of Mexico has pointed to the fragile balance between our economic needs and our ecology. There are all kinds of political opinions arising from this, but what if anything gives Christians the tools we need to make sense of this and respond faithfully? Using THE GREEN BIBLE, a recently published edition of the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, we will explore Bible passages which speak to a call to care for creation which is a significant part of the Bible's message. No less than Billy Graham has said: "To drive to extinction something (God) has created is wrong. He has a purpose for everything... We Christians have a responsibility to take the lead in caring for the earth." For more on THE GREEN BIBLE, see: http://greenletterbible.com/index.php
(You will not need a copy of THE GREEN BIBLE to participate in this Bible study. Any edition of the Bible can be used. Copies of the NRSV are available in the classroom.)
Final Session, 7/25 Theme 6: "The New Earth" - The earth and everything in it is included in God's plan of redemption. Creation does not pass away, but is restored and renewed as part of the new heaven and the new earth of God's kingdom. Scriptures explored: Isaiah 65:1-9, Isaiah 65:17-25, Joel 1:18-27, Revelation 21:1-5, Revelation 22:1-5.

The central theme is based upon the true story of the Klan's murder of an African American man in Oxford. 7/18: Theme 5: "The Full Impact of Sin" - Creation is harmed by human sin. Because our sin disconnects us from God, it distorts our relationship with God's creation as well. The result is a world out of sync with itself. Scriptures explored: Genesis 3:14-19; Hosea 4:1-3; Ezekiel 34:17-22; Numbers 35:33-34; Romans 8:18-25
