SESSION ON THE 196TH ANNUAL CONVENTION OF THE DIOCESE OF NORTH CAROLINA
JANUARY 29 -- Shepherd's Hall, 3rd fl., Duncan-Giersch Center
The Rt. Rev. Michael B. CurryO that it might be said of me, Surely thy speech betrayeth thee, Thou wast with Jesus of Galilee. --OId Scottish Church school poem
The Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, building on the challenge of last year's convention theme, "Let us Go to Galilee" - in which he set forth the Biblical Galilee of Jesus' time, "a land of dramatic diversity, a land of profound religious pluralism, a land of cultural confusion...social and political unrest...economic instability and uncertainty..." as a metaphor for the setting, in our culture, society and the world, in which the contemporary Church finds itself - went deeper into "Galilee" in his Pastoral Address to this year's convention, "Welcome to Galilee," in which he challenges the congregations and members of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina to "take on a Galilean accent." Based on Matthew 26:69-73 (http://bible.oremus.org/?ql=194593596), the Bishop encouraged the Diocese to "...explore ways to draw nearer and go deeper with Jesus... as the community of Jesus, the body of Christ called to be The Episcopal Church...to encourage prayer among us... at time of reading and wrestling with Holy Scriptures... not only as individuals, but together in groups. And...to take our prayers and our reading and our wrestling beyond the doors of our congregations and out into the mission field that God has given us, out into our 21st century Galilee."
This Sunday we will see, hear and discuss the Bishop's pastoral address in Shepherd's Hall. To watch a video of Bishop Curry's Pastoral Address to the 196th Convention of the Diocese of NC, (or download a pdf of the Address) click here: http://www.episdionc.org/dfc/newsdetail_2/3151214
Children's Advent Project: We purchased 3 flocks of chickens!
On Christmas Eve, the children brought forward their Advent Project Heifer boxes, filled with $60. With the money 3 flocks of chickens were purchased to help families somewhere in the world live a better life. Here's what Heifer International says about the gift of chickens:
Chicks: A Good Choice
A flock of chicks can help families from Cameroon to the Caribbean add nourishing, life-sustaining eggs to their inadequate diets.
The protein in just one egg is a nutritious gift for a hungry child. Protein-packed eggs from even a single chicken can make a life-saving difference.
Heifer helps many hungry families with a starter flock of 10 to 50 chicks. A good hen can lay up to 200 eggs a year - plenty to eat, share or sell. With Heifer recipients' commitment to pass on the offspring and training, the exponential impact of adding chickens to communities in poverty is truly a model that helps end hunger and poverty.
Because chickens require little space and can thrive on readily available food scraps, families can make money from the birds without spending much. And chickens help control insects and fertilize gardens. (https://secure1.heifer.org/gift-catalog/chicks.html)
Thank you for participating in our Advent Project. May your gifts share God's love and end suffering around the world.

Tract Rack Update
A number of new items can now be found in the "tract rack" at the first floor front entrance to the Duncan/Giersch Parish Life Center. Some of these were produced by "Gospel Imprint," "...the fresh catholic voice in Anglicanism sharing free resources with all Christians who are seeking to learn, worship and witness to the generosity of the Kingdom of God." (http://www.gospelimprint.com/) The Gospel Imprint tracts are under the general headings: Christian Faith; Christian Life; and Christian Prayer; and cover such topics as, "Becoming Who I Am," "Who is Jesus," "The Blessed Virgin Mary," "How Can I Pray," "The Sign of the Cross," "Belief in the Eucharist," "Beyond Death and Dying," and others. There is also a brochure on "Episcopal Spirituality" and a booklet discussing various ceremonies and devotional practices in the Eucharist.
