Join a Study at the Adult Development Lab at NCSU
The Adult Development Lab at NCSU is looking for interested volunteers to participate in their ongoing and new research projects. The studies involve one or more visits to their satellite office at 1033 Wade Avenue, Suite 104, to take a series of tests that measure general reasoning, decision-making, memory, and/or verbal ability. You also might be asked to fill out some questionnaires dealing with social attitudes and experience with technology. The tests are designed to be low-stress and many people find the process interesting and enjoyable.
The primary benefactor of the research for more than 20 years has been the National Institutes of Health. The willingness of local people to volunteer and participate in the studies is very important. Over the years, several thousand people aged 18-90+ from our area have participated, and the lab is always seeking new volunteers.
To participate, please contact the lab manager, Carla Marie Strickland, (919) 515-9063 or e-mail: adult_dev@ncsu.edu.
You'll find a brochure about the Adult Development Laboratory in the main lobby of the Duncan-Giersch Center.

CGS Habitat Workday Update!
From James Deal
Just a few quick things:
- Correction: The Groundbreaking Ceremony begins at 8:30am this Saturday, not 9am as previously stated.
- This Saturday is FULL! Thanks so much to those of you who have signed up.
- There are still a plenty of slots available for some of the remaining workdays. Please check your schedules so we can get those days filled as well.
- You must log in on http://habitatwake.volunteerhub.com/ and indicate the days you'll be working (both morning and afternoon, if you're doing both). The site stops taking signups about 24 hours before the build date.
- Note: Due to a discrepancy between what I was originally told and what they put into the website, there are fewer slots on the website than on the signup sheet. If you can't sign up, please come to the worksite anyway, because they should have a way to manually sign in.
The Groundbreaking Ceremony AND Our First Work Day will be Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 8:30 am. The ceremony will last about 1 hour, and Volunteer Construction will begin immediately after the ceremony & refreshments. This event is being held to raise money for research to find a cure for a rare form of cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). EYC's Harvest of Hope Experience
Thank you for prayerfully supporting our parish youth group as we served in Gaston, SC, last weekend. We spent Friday evening learning about those throughout the world who suffer from hunger, then awoke at 5:00am on Saturday morning and, together with groups from Massachusetts and Virginia, traveled to fields to glean over 12,000 pounds of watermelons. We delivered the melons to the Harvest of Hope Distribution Center in Columbia, SC, and spent the afternoon packaging more than 12,000 additional pounds of food for distribution throughout South Carolina. We had a great time together and look forward to sharing more about our trip. Please enjoy a piece of watermelon at "Lemonade on the Lawn" after the 10:30am service on August 22. Speak to our trip participants about our weekend together and about our plans to continue in service. Trip participants include Ainsley Seiger, James Kuhns, Erin Flynn, George Daughety, Seth Daughety, Matthew Russell, Jack Hart, Laura Hart, Wren Blessing, and our generous adult leaders, Tim Kuhns and Tim Hart.
Good News at CGS...
In case you haven't noticed, our clergy, acolytes, lay readers, and chalicists are wearing a wonderful new gift. They all have new, hand-made cinctures courtesy of the crocheting skills of May Sherrod, Kathy MacLeod, and Peg Dorer, all members of the St. Francis Guild. The cincture is the rope worn around the waist to hold a cassock or alb in place. Over the past year, 17 cinctures had been made by May, Kathy, and Peg for use in our services. The thread for the new cinctures came from the Convent of St. John Baptist in Mendham, NJ. We thank these ladies for their time, talent, and dedication to the lengthy project!
