GPS@CGS After Sunday AM -- Living the Words: Christians Basics as GPS

March 7, 14 & 21 following the 10:30AM Sunday Eucharist, on the porch of Shepherd's Hall, Third Floor Duncan/Giersch Parish Life Center

A time for new Christians, Seekers, and those who want to renew their understanding of the basics of Christian faith:

What does it mean when we say, "I believe in God the Father...Jesus Christ, his Son our Lord...The Holy Spirit..."? How about when we pray, "Our Father..." And where exactly is "...in heaven"...? And how about that stuff about "...Forgive us our sins as we forgive others...give us our daily bread"...? What do the Ten Commandments (aka "The Decalogue") mean for Christians today? What is Jesus teaching us in the "Summary of the Law"? Bill Bennett will lead us in unpacking key words we say in worship each week and each day:

  1. The "Summary of the Law" and Decalogue (Ten Commandments)
  2. The Creeds (Apostles' and Nicene)
  3. The Lord's Prayer

We'll explore what Scripture, Reason, and Tradition say about these fundamental texts and how they form a GPS for the raw data of our lives as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Meeting weekly, February 21-March 7, at 9:15AM, Room 403, 3rd Floor, Duncan-Giersch Center

Wise financial planning brings peace of mind...and enables us to be "instruments of peace"...

Financial peace frees us to be more fully God's servants, enjoy the life he has given us, and live a balanced life. Join financial planner, Jamey Bass, as he leads us in this weekly series. Occasional handouts and meditations prepared by Bill Bennett will connect personal finance issues with Scripture and the Christian tradition.

St. Francis Guild Ladies Are Going Strong!

The St. Francis Needlework Guild was formed in January 2006.  The original purpose was to knit or crochet prayer shawls for those in the parish who were going through difficult times.   This concept has grown exponentially!  Since that first organizational meeting in 2006, in addition to prayer shawls, we have included baby hats for Rex Hospital; angel buntings, tiny hats and blankets for the NICU at Wake Med; hats and scarves for the Christmas at Sea Program of the Seaman's Institute of New York; and miscellaneous items as the need arises.  To date, 1,091 items have been made, blessed by clergy, and distributed.  Of this number 123 have already been distributed in 2010!  This could be a record year for the members of the St. Francis Guild.  The 1,091 does not include the items that have been made, blessed, and are awaiting distribution.  It is an amazing group of dedicated women that participate in this powerful ministry.

The Guild is always looking for new members to help with this important, quiet ministry.  If you are a person who knits and/or crochets, or someone who would like to learn these crafts, you would be a most welcomed addition to the group.  The Guild meets on the second Wednesday of each month at noon and again at 7pm, so that anyone interested can attend one of the meeting times.  If you are interested in helping and participating in some wonderful fellowship, please contact Fyl Thompson at 831-2012 or fyl.thompson@cgs-raleigh.org

Jr. High EYC: March 7

This Sunday, March 7, the middle school members of EYC will meet at the church during our regular 5pm to 7pm time. Bill Bennett will be walking the Stations of the Cross with us, and you'll have an opportunity to ask questions afterwards. We'll also play some games and have dinner together.  We look forward to seeing you this Sunday!

Serve One Another Class: Exploring the Theology of Food with Lisa Towle

Meeting in Shepherd's Hall, 3rd Floor, Duncan-Giersch Center

Exploring The Theology of Food

Almighty God, we thank you for making the earth fruitful, so that it might produce what is needed for life. Bless those who work in the fields; give us seasonable weather; and grant that we may all share the fruits of the earth, rejoicing in your goodness through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer)

The third of the five-part series on the Theology of Food, will look at food and its production from an Old Testament perspective. Helping us understand how the thoughts and actions of the ancient Israelites relate to contemporary society will be Ellen Davis, Ph.D., via video clips. Ms. Davis, an Episcopalian, is also Professor of Bible and Practical Theology at Duke Divinity School. This class will be facilitated by Lisa Towle and will take place in Shepherd's Hall on the 3rd floor of the Duncan Giersch Parish Life Center. All are welcome. You needn't have participated in earlier discussions to take part in subsequent ones.

Saturday, March 6, 2010   -- 8:30am-6:00pm

Good Shepherd's Shift:  1:30pm - 3:30pm

Saint Saviour's Center, 618 Tucker St., downtown Raleigh

We've all seen the reports and video showing the massive number of Haitians displaced from their homes after the January 12th earthquake that devastated so much of that small country. A local non-profit group, Stop Hunger Now, dedicated to the worldwide eradication of hunger, has stepped up its efforts in Haiti and is currently sending meals, water, and medication to their partners there. At this time, 50,000 Haitians are receiving food and help on a daily basis at distribution points outside of Port-au-Prince.
