THE BIBLE CHALLENGE @CGS Update: Up next – The First Five Books of the Old Testament

For those who have completed reading through the Old Testament books of the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, the next section of the Bible we will move to in January is the first five books of the Old Testament - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy - also known as "The Pentateuch."

“The Pentateuch is the comprehensive name given to the first five books of the Old Testament, Genesis to Deuteronomy, traditionally called ‘the Books of Moses,’ …(The present titles of the Books of the Pentateuch) are not original, but have been added to the books from the Greek version, the Septuagint. The Hebrew titles are simply the opening words of each book, ‘In the beginning’ (Genesis), ‘These are the names’ (Exodus), ‘And he called’ (Leviticus), ‘In the wilderness’ (Numbers), ‘These are the words’ (Deuteronomy); and no author’s name is attached to them.” – Erith, L. E. P., “Introduction to the Criticism of the Pentateuch,” in Gore, Goudge & Guillaume, eds., A NEW COMMENTARY ON HOLY SCRIPTURE INCLUDING THE APOCRYPHA (1928)
