A Community in the Heart of the City
Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Raleigh, just one block west of the State Capitol, The Church of the Good Shepherd has been a place of faith, connection, and service for generations. While our historic stone walls speak to our deep roots in North Carolina’s capital, the spirit within our doors is focused on the present and the future. We are a vibrant, affirming community dedicated to inviting all people to know, love, and serve God, each other, and the world. Whether you are new to faith, searching for a spiritual home, or simply visiting, we have a seat saved for you.
Our Mission
The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd is, with God's help, a welcoming, inclusive, and growing community inspired by worship to actively serve others through the love, teaching, and example of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
The Three Pillars of Our Work
Our communal life and outreach are built upon three pillars that guide how we interact with our neighbors and the world:
Who We Are
At Good Shepherd, we believe that being a welcoming and inclusive community means that all are welcome here. We are an affirming congregation that celebrates the diversity of the human family.
Whether you are a lifelong Episcopalian, a seeker looking for a spiritual home, or a neighbor curious about our historic church, you belong here. We are a growing congregation that finds strength in our shared commitment to following the example of Jesus Christ—practicing a faith that is open, curious, and deeply rooted in love.
Our Heritage and Leadership
Our presence in downtown Raleigh is a testament to nearly 150 years of faith. Our journey is led by a dedicated team of clergy and lay leaders committed to our mission.

Our communal life and outreach are built upon three pillars that guide how we interact with our neighbors and the world:
- Advocacy: We believe in speaking up for the marginalized and using our voice to support justice and dignity for all of God’s children.
- Altruism: We are committed to hands-on service, providing direct help and compassion to those in our community who are in need.
- Alliances: We recognize that we are stronger together. We actively support and partner with organizations that share our values to maximize our impact in Raleigh and beyond.
